ABOUT TEARS

The human eye is lubricated by two kinds of tears produced by glands in the upper and lower eyelid

CONSTANT TEARS are continuously formed to lubricate the eye and contain natural antibiotics to help fight infections. When constant tears flow is reduced, there is irritation that can cause excessive reflex tearing “watery eyes. These excess tears lack the oil needed to keep from evaporating and do not lubricate the eye.

REFLEX TEARS are produced only in response to irritation, injury or emotion. They help rinse the surface of the eye. A balance is necessary between the two types of tears to ensure that your eyes are comfortable and protected. A lack of tears , improper lubrication, or tears draining too quickly from the eye result in a condition known as Dry Eye. Dry Eyes is a common problem that is easily diagnosed.

SYMPTOMS & CAUSES OF DRY EYES

Symptoms of dry eyes can include redness, dryness, burning, grittiness, excessive tearing, tired eyes, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light. Patients with dry eyes can feel a debilitating and difficult to function on a daily basis. Dry eyes can be exaggerated if you use computer for more than 2 hrs a day.

Some Causes of Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are more pronounced in persons who have reduced blink frequency, such as persons who do detailed technical work or those who work at a computer. Exposure to various environments can reduce eye lubrication. Dry eye is sometimes worsened by contact lens wear, since contact lenses increases tear evaporation that increases protein deposits, infection and pain. Also certain medications may reduce tear secretion as side effects. Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease accompanied by dry mouth and dry eyes. Another effect of dry eyes is from post-surgery which can disrupt the production of tears .

TREATMENT

Tears can be replaced by using eye drops , non preservative artificial tears. They replace the moisture that is missing and lubricate the eyes. Do not use preservative tears since that is the culprit in damaging the top layer of the cornea leading to disruption of the tear film. Studies have shown preservative0free tears are safe to use in dry eye patients needing frequent dosage through out the day. Another option to dry eye treatment is tear duct clsure which allows you to retain your own natural tears.

This allows your tears to bathe your eye for a longer perior of time, reducing the burning irritating dry eye syndrome. Relief from the discomfort of dry eyes may take 1-2 weeks while some feel an immediate relief. Non preservative artificial tears may be used in conjunction with punctal plugs for maximum relief.

- A natural way to significantly improve tear stability (and the amount of time it takes for your tears to evaporate) by increasing Meibomian gland output – this means your eyes stay lubricated and symptom-free longer, as nature intended.

- A clinically proven mechanical method to de-cap and stimulate Meibomian glands (like a facial for your eyes- unclog your glands and stimulate the natural production of oils to keep your eyes lubricated.)

- An effective at-home treatment that augments doctors’ in-office treatments to help decrease signs and symptoms of Dry Eye Disease (DED.)

BlephEx is a new, in-office procedure that allows a doctor to completely remove the scurf, debris, crusting, and exotoxin-laden biofilm that builds up on the patients lid margins over years. This biofilm causes the inflammation which slowly shuts down the tear glands and causes a wide range of other symptoms.

The BlephEx hand piece spins a surgical-grade micro PVA sponge at 2,500 RPM, which has been soaked in a lid scrub solution, along the lid margin. A fresh tip is used for each eyelid. Once clean, now home lid scrubs actually have a benefit in helping KEEP the lids clean, instead of expecting home scrubs to GET the lids clean. Treatments are performed every 4-6 months, sometimes sooner if necessary.

It removes the scurf and collarettes that can occupy the lids in blepharitis patients. In MGD, it removes epithelial overgrowth and plugging of meibomian glands orifices more efficiently than manual removal. Treating every 4 months can help your patients maintain and improve normal tear function and avoid contact lens intolerance.

How does the MiBoFlo or "Meibomian Duct Therapy" treat MGD/Dry Eye?
The MiBoFlo Thermoflo® is a new therapeutic device for the treatment of dry eye by employing a proprietary thermoelectric heat pump designed to liquefy hardened oil secretions and improve meibomian glandular function. MiBO treatment keeps your tears from evaporating between blinks by allowing the oily component from the meibomian gland to cover the entire tear film.
