The human eye is lubricated by two kinds of tears produced by glands in the upper and lower eyelid
CONSTANT TEARS are continuously formed to lubricate the eye and contain natural antibiotics to help fight infections. When constant tears flow is reduced, there is irritation that can cause excessive reflex tearing “watery eyes. These excess tears lack the oil needed to keep from evaporating and do not lubricate the eye.
REFLEX TEARS are produced only in response to irritation, injury or emotion. They help rinse the surface of the eye. A balance is necessary between the two types of tears to ensure that your eyes are comfortable and protected. A lack of tears , improper lubrication, or tears draining too quickly from the eye result in a condition known as Dry Eye. Dry Eyes is a common problem that is easily diagnosed.
Symptoms of dry eyes can include redness, dryness, burning, grittiness, excessive tearing, tired eyes, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light. Patients with dry eyes can feel a debilitating and difficult to function on a daily basis. Dry eyes can be exaggerated if you use computer for more than 2 hrs a day.
Dry eyes are more pronounced in persons who have reduced blink frequency, such as persons who do detailed technical work or those who work at a computer. Exposure to various environments can reduce eye lubrication. Dry eye is sometimes worsened by contact lens wear, since contact lenses increases tear evaporation that increases protein deposits, infection and pain. Also certain medications may reduce tear secretion as side effects. Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease accompanied by dry mouth and dry eyes. Another effect of dry eyes is from post-surgery which can disrupt the production of tears .
Tears can be replaced by using eye drops , non preservative artificial tears. They replace the moisture that is missing and lubricate the eyes. Do not use preservative tears since that is the culprit in damaging the top layer of the cornea leading to disruption of the tear film. Studies have shown preservative0free tears are safe to use in dry eye patients needing frequent dosage through out the day. Another option to dry eye treatment is tear duct clsure which allows you to retain your own natural tears.
Temporary closure of the tear duct (punctal canal) is accomplished by inserting a tiny PUNCTUM PLUG to prevent tear drainage. This allows your tears to bathe your eye for a longer perior of time, reducing the burning irritating dry eye syndrome. Relief from ...
